I hit Lake Royal over the weekend in hopes of getting a jump on pre-spawn bass. I opted for my popper/wet fly dropper rig. This approach allows you to pick off bluegills while you wait for the bass bite. The bass appear to be a week or so off, but the bluegills are moving shallow into the creek arms to feed. The bass will soon follow.

I suppose I could have stuck to streamer patterns for a better chance at a bass. I fished a wooly bugger and a zonker for a while. I even used a strymph with a wet dropper, but the popper/dropper approach was superior for the bluegill.
I am debating trout versus bass for this weekend. It will be cold, but I really want to get on some bass.
The bass seemed to turn on here during warm weather, though I didn't get out...boat in shop. Cold will probably send them back deep....maybe go for trout? I think I would.

I guess I am definately fly fishing now -- my Quantum spinning reel has a broken bail. It's down to my baitcaster and assorted fly rods. I'll go with the fly rods.
When you do get your boat back consider throwing TX rigged craw worms. I was reading how spring smallies really load up on nutrient rich forage like crawfish, and they prefer recently molted craws. I extrapolate that a soft craw worm with attractant will get a bite and get them to hold it in their mouths.
Test my theory!
