My Dad is starting to establish himself as a monster smallmouth hunter. Each year he spends on Lake James he seems to log more and more over the coveted 16" range. The entry below details his recent victory over an 18" smallmouth. This week Dad topped that fish by boating a true monster, 21", five-pound North Carolina bronzeback. Once again, the winning tactic was Uncle Leroy's sunset spoon technique. Hats off to Dad for the bass of the year

Thanks Matt....that was the biggest smallie ever for me....better than the nearly 8 pound large mouth I caught in Eastern NC....best thing is after a moment's reflection (temptation) turned him loose and he was off in a flash unhurt. Also the strike on an ultralite outfit with six pound line....memorable.
Dad
I had a shot at monster Texas carp yesterday. David and I fished Medi Park here in Amarillo yesterday. We came up on some mudding carp on a bridge crossing the feeder stream. I hooked my first carp on a fly. Sadly, he broke me off in about three seconds. I have yet to learn how to manually apply drag during the hook set; this cost me a monster smallie last year.
Our carp targetting resulted in no carp and four sunfish, of which, David got two. This experience piqued my interest in the behemoth challenge of fly carping.
In addition to smallies....Lake James has large schools of carp in the thirty pound range....can't even imagine one of those on a fly....at least you hooked one,
Dad
Got a cat on the fly. He was 18" and good practice fighting a strong, heavy fish on fly tackle. Will blog details when I get my computer set up in the new house (currently working off mobile)
